Frequently asked questions

What counts as a UK day?

HMRC counts a day as a UK day if you are present in the UK at the end of the day — that is, at midnight. So a day you arrive on usually counts, while a day you leave on (if you are gone before midnight) usually does not. Days spent purely in transit through the UK generally do not count either. ExpatTrack applies this midnight rule when you log where you were each day.

How many days can I spend in the UK as a non-resident?

It depends on your situation. If you were UK resident in any of the previous 3 tax years, the limit is 16 days. If you weren't, it's 46 days. If you work full-time overseas with no significant breaks, you can spend up to 90 UK days. Beyond those automatic tests, the Sufficient Ties Test allows 16-182 days depending on how many UK ties you have. ExpatTrack runs all of these for you.

What is the UK Statutory Residence Test (SRT)?

The SRT is HMRC's test to determine whether you're UK tax resident in a given tax year. It has three parts run in order: the Automatic Overseas Test (passing makes you non-resident), the Automatic UK Resident Test (passing makes you resident), and the Sufficient Ties Test (which combines days spent in the UK with up to five UK ties). ExpatTrack walks you through all three.

When does the UK tax year run?

The UK tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April the following year. So tax year 2025/26 runs from 6 April 2025 to 5 April 2026. ExpatTrack tracks your days against this exact window.

What are the five UK ties used in the Sufficient Ties Test?

Family tie (UK-resident spouse/partner/minor child), accommodation tie (a UK home available for 91+ days you actually use), work tie (40+ UK working days), 91-day tie (90+ days in either of the previous two tax years), and the country tie (more days in the UK than any other country — only counts if you were UK resident in any of the last 3 tax years).

Does ExpatTrack handle the Schengen 90/180 rule too?

Yes. The Schengen Tracker (£11/yr standalone, or included in Standard and Pro) tracks the 90 days in any rolling 180-day window across all 29 Schengen countries. Particularly relevant for UK citizens post-Brexit.

Founder: "Tracking days for tax has always felt highly complex. It was bonkers that everyone I spoke to was managing it in a spreadsheet. So I built ExpatTrack — to keep it simple, and to keep you up to date." — Tom
